After 40 years, duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars capture moments in automotive history.
This year, duPont REGISTRY, the source for supercars since 1985, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In that time, some of the world’s most desirable, iconic, and influential luxury and exotic cars have graced the cover of our magazine over the past 40 years, and together, the cover cars of duPont REGISTRY’s hundreds of monthly issues tell a story of automotive history and its evolution since the ‘80s.
Looking back at duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars from the year 1987, some serious nostalgia is stirred up for any automotive enthusiast, and each year, a cover car shows an iconic moment of the past, when a car we see as a classic today was the hottest new creation on the market. Take a trip down memory lane and look at our 1987 magazine covers below, and continue to celebrate our milestone anniversary by requesting a copy of our special 40th anniversary edition magazine. In the early years, duPont REGISTRY Magazine covers were illustrations, rather than today’s photographs.
February – Ferrari Testarossa
One of the greatest supercar icons of the 1980s, the Ferrari Testarossa has a silhouette and design that is still unmistakable today. The mid-mounted flat-12-powered supercar was one of the greatest in its time, and as a retro supercar legend, its perfect home is on our February 1987 cover.
March – Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
A highly desirable, pricy, and collector-grade legend in the automotive world, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL already had coveted status when it was featured on our March 1987 cover 38 years ago. While it is the convertible variant, as opposed to the gullwing-doored coupe, the 300 SL is a true legend.
April – Rolls-Royce Phantom
The historic flagship of Rolls-Royce, any part of the Phantom’s century-long history is not only a collector-grade automotive masterpiece, but a car that’s truly worthy of a spot on duPont REGISTRY’s cover, like it has on the April 1987 issue.
May – Ferrari 365 ‘Daytona’
Ferrari’s iconic front-engined grand tourer is still a celebrated classic performance car to this day, and the Ferrari 365 Daytona, as seen on our May 1987 cover, still remains influential to the brand as it served as inspiration for the design of today’s Ferrari icons like the 12Cilindri.
June – Ferrari 330 P4
A racing classic known for its incredible domination at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ferrari 330 P4 was a cornerstone in helping Ferrari cement the motorsport legacy it’s cherished for today. Shown on our June 1987 cover, it’s a desired collector classic.
July – Porsche 911
The ever-legendary Porsche 911 is a mainstay on duPont REGISTRY’s cover, and as one of the world’s favorite sports cars for over 60 years, it’s for good reason. In 1987, the Porsche 911 was featured on the cover in July.
August – Mercedes-Benz 540K
The legendary classic Mercedes-Benz grand touring model was known not only for its sweet, charming design and classic beauty but also for its wire wheels and whitewall tires, which are the star of our August 1987 cover.
September – Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa
A stunning retro barchetta, the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa was a legend of Ferrari’s classic racing-ready engineering and automotive performance, and certainly deserving of starring on duPont REGISTRY’s September 1987 cover.
October – Jaguar XJ
The Jaguar XJ spent many decades as one of the world’s favorite luxury cars, and the XJ40 generation of the Jaguar XJ, which was contemporary at the time of duPont REGISTRY’s October 1987 cover.
November – Ford Fairlane
One of the many icons of the ’50s, the Ford Fairlane was known for the celebrated tail fins and copious use of chrome, and it’s a cherished classic both when it featured on the November 1987 cover of duPont REGISTRY, and today.
December – Gemballa Cyrrus
An iconic name in German performance, Gemballa was known for its unique creations, including the Cyrrus, which was featured on our December 1987 cover. Today, the car lives on as a retro icon and an enthusiast favorite.
