BMW's "entry-level" M car packs 473 HP, tremendous backroad performance, and a refined cabin, but it's short on engagement.
The 2025 BMW M2 is a standout performance bargain starting at $69,375. With 473 horsepower from its turbocharged 3.0L inline-six and rear-wheel drive, it offers an authentic BMW M experience that rivals more expensive sports cars.
Now in its second generation (G87), the M2 borrows key components from the M3 and M4, making it faster, more capable, and easier to live with than its predecessor. Updates include BMW’s iDrive 8.5, new customization options, and a subtle styling refresh. It’s available with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic, with the latter offering better real-world acceleration and torque.
Though the manual is rare and appealing, its vague shifter and less torque make it less engaging than expected. Interior comfort is solid with optional carbon bucket seats, though ergonomics can be tricky. The M2’s grip, braking, and handling shine on twisty roads, though its quiet cabin and artificial steering dull the driving connection.
Despite minor drawbacks like digital exhaust sounds and touchscreen-heavy controls, the M2 remains unmatched for its mix of daily usability and serious speed. It may not be the rawest M car ever made, but it’s a refined, capable coupe that still upholds BMW’s performance legacy—at a fraction of a Porsche 911’s price.
